Rakuten Points Strategy: How SPU and Shop-Hopping Raise Your Return
Rakuten Points start from a base 1x, and the multiplier grows as you stack SPU, shop-hopping and campaigns. Here is how the system works and a sane order to stack it.
The Base Is 1x — Bonuses Usually Arrive Later and Expire
Purchases on Rakuten Ichiba earn base points at 1x by default. Bonus points from campaigns and shop-hopping are usually credited later in a batch, as limited-time points with their own expiry. If your balance doesn't move right after buying, check the scheduled credit date and the point type first.
- Limited-time points are spent automatically, soonest-expiring first
- Scheduled credits show in your purchase history and campaign pages
- Build the habit of spending near-expiry points on staples
SPU: Multipliers Accrue per Rakuten Service You Use
SPU (Super Point Up Program) raises your Rakuten Ichiba points multiplier for each Rakuten service you use — Rakuten Card, Rakuten Bank, Rakuten Mobile and more. Each service carries its own multiplier, applied to purchases in months where you meet its conditions. Rather than forcing new services, first verify the ones you already use are crediting correctly.
- Check your current total SPU multiplier on the SPU page in Rakuten Ichiba
- Don't miss fine-print conditions, like the Rakuten Card's debit account
- Never sign up for unneeded services just for a multiplier
Shop-Hopping: Shop Count Times the ¥1,000 Threshold
Shop-hopping in the Marathon and Super Sale grows your shop count with each shop where you spend ¥1,000+ tax included, up to 10 shops. The basket-design trick is not to chase the count with expensive items, but to deliberately split small staples and food across different shops. As a final check, make sure each shop's total stays above ¥1,000 after coupons.
- Keep a per-shop shopping note to avoid miscounting
- Check the free-shipping line and the ¥1,000 rule separately
- In rounds with a roughly 7,000-point cap, change strategy after hitting it
The Stacking Order: Entry, SPU Check, Basket Design, Payment Day
The efficient order is four steps: (1) enter the sale and campaigns, (2) verify your SPU multipliers are active, (3) design baskets around the shop count and ¥1,000 rule, (4) shift non-urgent purchases onto a 5-or-0 day. Buy before entering and that order rides no campaign at all. Same basket, right order — a very different return.
- On day one, open the entry screens before buying anything
- The 5-and-0 campaign usually requires entry too
- Points are not a cash discount — judge purchases by the amount paid
